The Vans Warped Tour 2017 Interviews – Movements

A blistering hot summer of Vans Warped Tour was coming to an end, and Movements would find themselves playing the last two dates in San Diego and Pomona – both within the vicinity of their South Orange County home turf.  This would be a triumphant grand finale, as Movements was very well received by the fans and friends who surrounded the Full Sail Stage at both Qualcomm Stadium and Pomona Fairplex. Movements performed selections from their recently issued Outgrown Things EP on Fearless Records as well as a brand new song entitled Deadly Dull.  Highwire Daze Online caught up with vocalist Patrick Miranda to discuss their summer adventures on the Vans Warped Tour and a whole lot more!  Read on…

Introduce yourself and tell me what you do in Movements?
My name is Pat and I sing for Movements.

How’s Warped Tour been going and what have been some of the highlights for you?
Warped Tour has been awesome, honestly. It’s probably been the funnest tour that I’ve ever been a part of. There’s so many great things about this tour. Not just the shows, the shows themselves are awesome but the amount of people that we’ve become close with whom are also on the tour that we probably wouldn’t have had the opportunity to become close with otherwise is crazy.

We’ve become really good friends with a band called The Acacia Strain. I’ve become really good friends with the guys in Knocked Loose. Both of those bands are much heavier than Movements would ever tour with otherwise. So it’s awesome to be building friendships and bonds with people that we wouldn’t get a chance to otherwise. That’s been the biggest thing for me, we’ve just met so many awesome people and made so many lifelong friends from this tour that – there’s nothing better.

Have you had the chance to hang out with GWAR yet?
No, I haven’t. I honestly never see them and I also don’t know what they look like without all their gear on, so I have no idea who they are. I’ve probably seen them around.

Probably at the catering line.
Yeah and just didn’t know who they were. Exactly.

Is there any overall story or concept behind the Outgrown Things EP title?
Yeah, I mean Outgrown Things is sort of – with it being our first release, it was definitely sort of a coming of age record. There’s a lot of themes of kind of growing up too quickly or being forced to grow up too quickly that are on Outgrown Things, but that’s just part of life. You have to be able to move on from. Certain, I guess, life situations that even if you’re not fully ready to like – you have to move on in order to allow yourself to continue to grow and to accept the changes that are going to come throughout your life and bring in those new chapters regardless of if you are fully ready to do that or not. Basically, the idea is everything in life is an outgrown thing. You’ve outgrown everything up until this point and it’s gotten you to where you are today. Whether it be a past relationship or moving out of your first house or anything that forces you to be more of an adult than you’re ready to be. That’s sort of the idea behind Outgrown Things.

I noticed you were doing some new songs in the set. Select one song from the EP and one new song, what inspired the lyrics for you?
My favorite song from Outgrown Things is Kept.  I just love that song. I think it’s such a strong song. That’s the opener. That song is about dealing with personal image issues. So kind of being very self conscious and dealing with your sort of insecurities and what not. With that, the cycles of anxiety and depression that come with not having any sort of self-esteem. That’s what that song is about and there’s not really an uplifting message in there at all. It’s just sort of a sad song, but a lot of the times I think that sad songs are the ones that help people the most because you can relate. If you’re going through the same thing, people can relate to what you’re talking about and ultimately I think that’s the most therapeutic thing imaginable. Just being able to have someone else understand you and understand what you’re going through.

Then as far as the new stuff goes, the new song that we play in our set is called “Deadly Dull” and it’s going to be on the new record we’re putting out in October. We don’t have a release date for the record yet but it’s coming out at some point in October. That song is about Alzheimer’s and dementia. That song in particular is about my girlfriend’s grandfather and her grandmother who – her grandmother passed away like 8-9 months ago now. But he grandfather has dementia and he doesn’t know that she’s gone. He still asks to go see her. He doesn’t quite understand that she died. That’s really really heartbreaking to watch because I see him every couple of months or so whenever we go through on tour. They live in Florida, but we stay with them every time we’re on tour. When I get to see him it’s like, he kind of knows who I am but he doesn’t really know. He still goes and wants to see his wife and they have to tell her she’s gone. It’s just this heartbreaking thing to watch. That’s what the new song is about, just watching him go through that and just sort of – the struggles that come with someone who has Alzheimer’s or dementia. It’s a tough thing to watch someone go through.

You guys have any happy songs? Just kidding.
Actually yeah, on the new record we actually have two happy songs which is unlike anything Movements has ever done. We’ve never written a happy song up until this point, so to have two on the record out of 11 songs. Two out of 11. That’s a pretty good ratio of happy songs as far as Movements is concerned.

What advice would you give a band attempting to do Warped Tour for the very first time next year?
Oh man. It depends. If you’re going to be doing it on a bandwagon or a bus, you’re golden because it’s so sick. It’s really not hard at all. Just be prepared, obviously bring a lot of sun screen. Drink a lot of water. You’re going to be dirty, smelly and gross a lot so baby wipes and anything you can do to clean off at the end of the day is super important. But if you’re planning on doing it in a van or trailer, and not having a shower on board, that’s like – I honestly don’t know how half the bands on this tour have done it. Straight up. It’s such a crazy tour to do without some sort of home base. But I guess, just be prepared to really rough it I guess. It’s gonna be a lot of real long drives, a lot of real uncomfortable sleeping arrangements and what not. Ultimately it’s worth it, so yeah. I don’t know. I guess just be prepared for a little bit of hell, but a lot of pay off because it’s a lot of fun.
