From Inside: Inspiring Alternative Metal from Liverpool

Meet From Inside, an alternative metal band from Liverpool ready to take on the world in an epic way – especially if their recently issued EP entitled The New Era is any indication of greater glories ahead.  Teaming up with Drew Lawson at Steel City Studios in England, whose clients include Bring Me The Horizon and While She Sleeps, From Inside’s debut EP is sure to enrapture fans looking to discover a powerful new band on the rise.  We recently caught up with guitarist Thomas Booth to find out more about From Inside and their inspiring new EP.  Read on…

Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in From Inside, and how long the band has been together.
Hey whatsup? My name is Tom and I play guitar in From Inside. I’ve been in bands with our guitarist Phil for almost a decade now which is pretty much THE same band just evolved into different projects. Bam was in our previous band ‘The Day Will Come’ and we recruited Nick through our old vocalist when we decided to go down a more orchestral/cinematic route as he has done a lot of his own DJ stuff and studied in musical production. Last year, I was recommended to our frontman Simon and instantly it felt like he was the missing piece of the jigsaw. It was when Simon joined the band when we decided to start up fresh as From Inside. On Friday 13th January we launched our debut EP entitled ‘The New Era’ and its blowing my mind how well its going down in such a short space of time. Hopefully this is the start of something really big for us.

Where is From Inside based out of and what is the local music scene like there?
We are based in Liverpool, England. The Beatles has pretty much led people to consider Liverpool to be the capital of the world and music has always thrived here. However the metal scene has had a mountain load of ups & downs over the past 10 years. When I was first doing bands when I was younger, there was so many metal shows going on all the time, the turnouts where always massive and everyone went so crazy for the bands… especially between about 2006 and 2009. After then a lot of the venues such as Heaven & Hell, Bar Fresa and Roadkill got closed down at the same time. I guess a lot of the people who came to these shows just moved onto new things in their lives. Over the past year or so there has been a real sharp upturn in the local scene here and its as healthy as it has been for a long long time. I hope this continues because as a band we really know the importance of a good unified local scene.

Is there any story or concept behind the album title The New Era?
The New Era is sort of a metaphor where we are at in our personal lives and also as musicians. It is very conceptual with a lot of messages throughout which you will also see on our music videos. I think I would prefer to hear people’s interpretations on it all than to reveal too much here about it.

Select two songs from The New Era and what inspired the lyrics.
My two personal favourites are Be Yourself and Still Breathing. I personally just write the music so didn’t have a great deal of input into any of the lyrics in either of these two. I think Be Yourself is self explanatory from the name, and Still Breathing lyrical message is pretty similar in that it is about becoming the person you want to be but it’s more of an ode to growing up & the difficulties you face with that.

What could one expect from a live From Inside show?
Expect the unexpected. Nah that sounds very cliche but in today’s world of live performance, we are always on the look out for ways to stand out from the crowd. People should just come down to a show and see for themselves.

Has From Inside ever played live in the States or plan to do so in the future?
That’s the dream! Hopefully we will be in a position to make that happen sooner rather than later, as I love visiting America so much.

If From Inside could open for any band either now or from the past, who would it be and why?
Probably Linkin Park, just because you know that it would instantly be in the most ridiculously big venue going. That’s a band I think most people from our generation connected with when they were growing up, and it would be a privilege to open for them… so long as they decided to only play a set list consisting of songs from their earlier albums!

The Queen of England invites From Inside to play one song at a Royal Command Performance. What song would you do for Her Majesty and her guests and why?
It would have to be There Was A Time, which is the last track on our EP and is also the heaviest. It would just be funny for the Queen to witness a breakdown I suppose, plus that song is the longest in length so we could enjoy the experience for a bit longer than if we played any of our other songs.

Are you involved with any other bands or project outside of From Inside?
I am constantly writing new music for fun but From Inside is the only actual project. We have very high aspirations on where we are taking From Inside and to reach our goals we need to be focused. There just isn’t any time for any of us to have other music projects in our lives.

What would you like a listener to remember the most after hearing The New Era for the very first time?
I want them to think “this is the best record I have ever heard”… just kidding. In reality whether someone just likes certain parts of a song or if they like every section of every song, I just find it satisfying for people to enjoy the music that I have put my blood, sweat and tears into writing. We get messages all the time from fans saying how our music has helped them through a difficult time in their lives, and if our music helps anyone out with any issues, it just makes it all the more worthwhile for us.
