Teenage Wrist

With the signing of Teenage Wrist to Epitaph Records, the glorious Los Angeles shoegaze experience is ready to explode on the national scene and well beyond. Definitely one of the most compelling bands emerging from the legendary City Of Angeles music scene, Teenage Wrist unveiled an exhilarating show at The Hi Hat, playing their intensive sonic reveries to a jam-packed house. The band recently announced March 19th as the release date for their Epitaph Records debut entitled Chrome Neon Jesus – and Teenage Wrist would debut many of the songs from this upcoming entreaty at The Hit Hat.

Teenage Wrist is surely in the forefront of the next generation of shoegaze rock, taking over where bands such as Ride and My Bloody Valentine trail blazed in the 90’s, and then sending it all into the stratosphere. Spiraling melodies and edgy hooks abound, making for a dazzling auditory adventure that all types of music fans will desire to embark upon. Songs such as Swallow, Rollerblades, and Afterglow were absolutely mesmerizing, setting the imagination in the flight. Superb musicianship was on full display featuring the captivating performances of core members Kamtin Mohager on bass and vocals, Marshall Gallagher on guitar and vocals, and Anthony Salazar on drums. Expect 2018 to be a banner year for Teenage Wrist, whose intensively artistic compositions and kaleidoscopic live shows are not to be missed.

Tennis System

In addition to the headlining Teenage Wrist, this memorable night of shoegaze also featured two dynamic opening acts. In direct support was Tennis System, who placed their own imaginative spin on the genre, and what a wondrously exciting show these supremely talented musicians unleash. Their Facebook page lists their sound as “noise rock” and “punkgaze,” and the vibrantly energetic performance this trio unveils is nothing short of mesmerizing. Celebrating the release of a brand new single entitled Lackluster, Tennis System certainly sent the room spinning with their gorgeously raging tapestries. At times serene and then nearly blowing the roof off The Hi Hat with a devastating wall of sound, this Los Angeles based collective pummels the senses with an auditory overload of imagination and intrigue.

Presenting this journey into the tumultuous heart of punkgaze were Matty T on vocals and guitar, Garren on drums, and Sam on bass. In addition to the unveiling of Lackluster live, other songs in the set that transfixed the early arrivals included Esoteric, Here We Go, Deserve, and Lie. Until Tennis System arrives within your town to blast away your ears with their amazing sonnets, be sure to check out their brand new single Lackluster on MDDN Records as well as their vast and glorious back catalog of tunes.  An interview with Tennis System is coming soon to Highwire Daze Online!

Souvenirs

Opening the show at the breakfast clubbing hour of 9PM was Souvenirs, who made their way from the wilds of Carpinteria in a more than likely barrage of traffic. Citing bands such as Pavement and Hum as pivotal influences, Souvenirs enraptured The Hi Hat early on with a magnetic set of tunes. From the soothing vocals to the dark and pulsating wall of sound, Souvenirs was an absolutely thrilling way to kick off a night of breathtaking musical inspiration.

Teenage Wrist, Tennis System, and Souvenirs were a marvelous triple threat of wondrous auditory bliss, clearly demonstrating that innovation and imagination are very much alive and well within the lucrative confines of Southern California’s music scene.
