The Vans Warped Tour 2018 Interviews: outsideOUTSIDE

Highwire Daze Online recently conducted an email interview with outsideOUTSIDE, a captivating new band from the world famous Los Angeles signed to Warner Brothers Records.  The auditory artistry presented by outsideOUTSIDE is both compelling and inspirational, with vibrantly reflective lyrics and superbly imaginative soundscapes permeating your senses.

We caught up with founding members Kali and Tali at the Vans Warped Tour in Ventura, where they were onsite enjoying the bands as well as promoting their own upcoming L.A. show at The Viper Room on July 24th.  While the previous interview went deeper into the lyrical content, our meet and greet in Ventura focused on the Vans Warped Tour, their upcoming L.A. live debut, being signed to a major label, and a whole lot more!  And now presenting Kali and Tali of outsideOUTSIDE from Seaside Park in Ventura. Read on…

Introduce yourself and tell me what you do in outsideOUTSIDE.
Tali: I’m Tali, I sing and do some writing.
Kali: I’m Kali,  produce and sing – also write a little bit as well.

What were your first impressions when you discovered that the Vans Warped Tour was coming to an end?
Tali: I may have cried a little bit…
Kali: Yeah, it was very abrupt. We didn’t really expect it at all – and we were like, shit, we kind of have to go now. There’s really not any other option.
Tali: It still really hasn’t sunk it though. It sucks. I went twice – I went to San Diego and now I’m here again. Just can’t let go.

What are you both looking forward to the most about Warped Tour today?
Tali: We were looking forward to seeing Underoath
Kali: Yeah, no offence to everyone else who’s playing. We love a lot of the bands. But we’re diehard Underoath fans. They’re my favorite band ever. We just didn’t read the right dates. The Used is good. And Taking Back Sunday we’re really stoked for. Issues were really stoked for.
Tali: And Movements. I’m stoked for Movements.
Kali: Yeah, there’s so many. But we just love Underoath.

The outsideOUTSIDE debut L.A. show is coming up at The Viper Room on July 24th. What could one expect from a live outsideOUTSIDE show?
Tali: Something you’re not expecting when you look for the Outside, cuz a lot of people have something they think it’s going to be in their head. But it’s going to be a little different surprise.
Kali: We’re been working with a lot of different options for a while and kind of found this cool blend of an urban set with a rock set with a DJ set. We’re just putting a lot of those elements together, building cool instrument racks with all different stuff on it that you’ve never seen before. Just trying to change it up and do a newer version of rock and roll with a three piece. This is Ali – he plays with is in our band live. It’s a three piece live.

So are you guys nervous at all about the upcoming Viper Room show?
Tali: I wish I was. I just know that it’s going to be fun. The nerves haven’t set in yet.
Kali: It’s a little nerve-wracking because we’re going to be having a lot of people that have been working with us on development since the start there. We obviously really want to impress them. We had a couple of icebreaker shows. We did a Coachella after party – we played a show in Chicago – and there were actually a lot of people at it. We’ve had a few chances to get used to it, I think.
Tali: We’ve just got to meet the expectations of the fans for sure. It’s the only thing to be nervous about.

And of course, it’s at the notorious Viper Room, so that should be cool…
Kali: Just getting to see our name up there is gonna be pretty sweet. That’s always a cool moment – driving up Sunset Blvd and seeing it.
Tali: Yeah, it’s pretty historic. We’ll never be able to forgot that.

Kudos to Warner Brothers for signing such a compelling and unique band. Do you feel any pressure being signed to a major label?
Tali: Yeah, for sure. A healthy pressure. Absolutely.
Kali: I’ve heard about the major labels – touring for a while and everything. But it’s cool. We just like to keep the music separate from it. They’ve done everything they can to provide for us at this point and get us to where we need to be and it’s awesome! It’s that extra arm that we need.
Tali: That extra support and extra having someone believe in you.
Kali: And it’s always a good thing.

If the music of outsideOUTSIDE was a donut, what kind would it be and why?
Kali: Oh, wow. Considering that Natalie can’t eat most donuts…
Tali: It would have to be lactose, gluten free donut. (Laughs)
Kali: She’s basically nothing with cheese or gluten, pastries, or anything like that.
Tali: Allergies man…
Kali: But I would say it would have to be contrasting – something almost a little bit awkward. So probably a blueberry donut with chocolate on it.
Tali: Like breakfast but sweet…
Kali: …and fruity…
Tali: …like with dark chocolate chips and blueberries on it.

What’s up next for you guys after The Viper Room? Any touring in the works?
Kali: Yeah, hopefully a New York show it’s looking like in the beginning of August. That’s kind of where my hometown is from – I grew up playing in a lot of bands around there – so I’m excited to hopefully play for some of those fans again.
Tali: And after that we’ll be working on releasing the EP…
Kali: …and then it will probably be a Fall West Coast Tour after the EP is released.

And any messages for people who are reading this interview now?
Kali: Thank you, because you’re there at these very early stages.
Tali: Thank you for reading this interview right now.
Kali: Basically we’re going to take everybody who supports us now with us the whole time. That’s a big thing to us – is not forgetting the fans who started with us. So if you’re listening now – thank you very much!
